“No cherries grow on our trees”: A Social Policy Research Paper for the Take Action Project

“No Cherries Grow on Our Trees” is a project conducted by the Take Action Project, a public policy initiative designed to identify links between poverty and violence in women’s lives in Ontario. The results are critical to the success of the government of Ontario’s anti-poverty strategy. The Take Action Project is managed by the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC) and the Woman Abuse Council of Toronto (WACT). Consultations were conducted with more than 50 partners to identify key issues and gaps related to women’s experiences of poverty and violence, and to provide feedback on the draft findings and recommendations. The project included interviews by researchers with partner organizations; in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews conducted with women who had experienced poverty and violence; and a review of the secondary literature. The interviews focused on women’s experiences of poverty and violence, their needs, and the recommendations they would make to government. The research found that poverty has a disproportionate impact on women as a group, closely tracking and reinforcing social inequalities, and that women living in poverty suffer discrimination, including in Ontario’s social services and public institutions. Women’s poverty often traps them in abusive relationships and affects their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Furthermore, they face multiple barriers to accessing services and socioeconomic supports. The report’s recommendations to the Cabinet Committee on Poverty Reduction include recommendations on  information and education.
