Future Directions for Legal Aid Delivery

This discussion paper addresses inadequate strategies and coordination of access to justice initiatives and the gaps in knowledge about improving access to justice. As part of the Envisioning Equal Justice Initiative, it provides some context for the legal needs of people living in poverty in Canada and considers the specific characteristics and needs of people who most require publicly funded legal assistance. The paper outlines current trends in legal aid delivery, with recent examples of particular innovations, and examines how well those trends meet the needs of the target population. It discusses support for legal aid lawyers and providers and concludes with several questions to generate feedback and further discussion of the issues.
