Promoting Preventive Legal Health: a Toolkit for Lawyers

This background paper and set of tools aims to introduce Canadian lawyers to the concept of “promoting legal health”, or reaching their clients at an early stage before small legal issues turn into large legal problems. The background paper provides information about reaching clients early in their problem cycle, and suggests specific ideas to help legal institutions and individual lawyers implement preventive approaches, such as developing relationships with community intermediaries and using legal health checklists with their clients. The overall goal of the toolkit is to enable lawyers to help improve the public’s understanding of the role of law in their lives, and help them take steps to avoid the anxiety and costs of protracted legal problems.
