The Radical Promise of Public Legal Education in Canada

The author traces the emergence of PLEI to the 1960s and the radical promise of the American War on Poverty. It is her contention that the social justice and law reform goals of PLEI as it first appeared have been lost in favour of an approach that focuses on the content of law but omits critical analysis of it and that forfeits the initial intention of transferring control from elites to the community. Current PLEI models provide access to law but not to justice.
